Week #32 Dig In

Image
Hello everyone, welcome back! I hope you all had a great week. I appreciate all the messages and emails that I’ve received from you all! Let’s get right into the report of the week… Tuesday: After finishing our morning routines and about to begin our weekly planning the office elders called us. They told us that we needed to drive to Gabs (capital city) for me to go do my Botswana visa work so I don't get deported. When we arrived they were just finishing their Gabs zone conference so we got to eat their food with them and see all of my mission buddies- it was so much fun! Following that I went with the office elders (Machisu and Opheikens) as well as 3 sisters and another elder to run around from place to place for our visa applications. I got a nice pic with my new short hair. Before heading back to Kanye I dropped the elder I was with at his flat which happens to be Elder Tolberts flat which has 6 missionaries! It looks like so much fun! On our way to Kanye I stopped at their hu...

Week #31 Don't Drive Drunk

Hello everyone! It's good to say hi to all of you again. It's no surprise that I'm writing this email right before my curfew so as per usual I'll be speeding through this email. Hopefully you can enjoy this mess of an email… Tuesday: I called every single person in our area book this morning for weekly planning. Weekly planning is honestly the most boring part of the week so that was a bit of a grind but we made it. On Tuesdays we start late because weekly planning takes a few hours but we still managed to get 6 lessons in which is good for a Tuesday! On our way home there was a car stuck on the hill so we towed him up the hill and to his home (perks of having a baaki now). Wednesday: This morning the AP's (Assistants to the President)  showed up at our flat unannounced since “they're doing exchanges with the Zone leaders until Friday”. A Lot of lessons fell through today which sucked but the lessons we did have were nice. Our last stop of the night was at our b...

Week #30 Working Away In Kanye

Image
Hello everyone! This week was a pretty quick week but it was a good one. Nothing crazy to report but we'll get into it anyway… Tuesday: As usual our Tuesday began with weekly planning which takes like 3 hours. It involves calling like a million people. While we did that we alternated with each other between calling people and building a Star Wars Lego Christmas advent calendar (I just received my Christmas package which has been in the office). It was pretty hype, we finished the whole thing.  A bit later in the day, we were going to a lesson and the dirt road was looking a bit suspect. *side note, they dig massive trenches here for construction and then leave them for weeks even months. Hence the mud. We tried to make it through and got the car stuck in the mud. After digging, and putting rocks and logs under the tires, nothing was working. We called the ZL's to come get us so they could tow us. Elder Kelley was grabbed and kissed by a drunk kuku (grandma) while he was driving...

Wee #29 Rain, Rainbows, Conference And Christmas In April.

Hello all, I'm glad that you're all back for another weekly recap of my life in Botswana. I'm very tired today so the format will be slightly different but hopefully it can still be somewhat insightful. Tuesday: We taught 6 lessons today It rained a little at lunch time We stopped at the other 4 elders compound (Two homes) "the white fortress" so Elder Kivuva could do some DL (district leader) stuff. I played on their makeshift console boards with them, it was lit Wednesday: We taught 7 lessons today They have fat cakes here! They're a lot bigger though and they stuff them with ground beef I beat Kivuva at pool while we waited for a friend to come for our lesson. They have pay-to-play pool tables everywhere outside here under tin roofs It was pouring rain all afternoon/evening We put junior on date Whenever anyone yells “Makoa” (white person) at me, Elder Kivuva yells “Botswana” at them, it's very funny Thursday: We had district council today, it was aight...

Week #28 A Chicken With Its Head Cut Off

This week was a bit different with something unexpected happening very abruptly. Let's get this started… Tuesday: After planning out our week and having a brief zone council we went out for the day. Our first lesson was with a sister named Julia, she’s been taught since before I got here. We’ve been inviting her to pray about baptism but she always “forgets”. Anyways, we had a really good lesson with her today and put her on date for mid april so that was awesome!  We had a couple of decent lessons and then one canceled so we went and said hi to some members (Charmaine, Lucky, Lilie-Angela), they’re so funny. We talked for a while and somehow got to the topic of “lobola” (paying the bride's family with cows/money). Turns out that one tribe here, the Herrero's, just marry their cousins and close relatives so they can “beat the system”... no further comments.🤣 Our last lesson was with a brother who approached us about a week ago while he was drunk saying he needed help. He t...
