Week #44 Govy, Goals, And Unexpected Grabs
This week felt pretty slow but our area and zone actually did really great! Here's a little update.
Tuesday:
Our allotment came in today instead of yesterday so we quickly went grocery shopping in the morning and then came back home for weekly planning. We had a few contacts and about 4 lessons, plus our branch coordination meeting. The highlight of the day was when we went to teach Donald’s (AKA. Government, Govy, Government of Botswana) friend. While we were there he did “the challenge”, where he starts doing some crazy belly bouncing/ dancing. For those of you wondering, Govy is a big dude and a comedian. I think he's 19. Make sure to check out the video in the link.
Wednesday:
We got out early today and got 2 lessons back to back. After that we whipped over to Gallo Mall in the city for lunch and then we returned to Gerald. However, while we were walking back to the car some girl that Santos used to teach walked up and said hi to him. Then she looked at me, called me “Nyash” (butt) and then grabbed my butt (I've never met this lady in my life). We got 5 more lessons for the day. The highlights were our friend Lucia and a FB referral named Precious. Lucia is one of the sisters that we have on date and she is so smart and receptive, and Precious seemed really interested about the BOM and what we had to say. We ended the night by talking to the family, Louis’s, that we are helping get married, they’re so close!!!
Thursday:
We went to F-Town so I could take Tchicumbi to Gerald and Santos would go with Egburhe to F-Town for the day. We taught a bunch of lessons today, a few went really well. Our last one with the Louis family (the ones we're helping get married) went great, we taught about baptism and read 2 nephi 31. When we went to swap back Tchicumbi for Santos we met all the other missionaries at a member's home for her B-Day, so we got a quick meal and some cake which was a great way to finish the night.
Friday:
We had DC this morning which went well, besides getting passively shambocked about my driving. We had a couple lessons which both went great, one of which was a FB referral, Precious, who seems really interested. We got an emergency call from a member in F-Town who wasn't feeling well so we whipped over to town and stayed with her until the Allens got there. We taught a few more lessons and then got some bad news. A few kids were robbed at knifepoint on their way home from seminary so we checked all of them to make sure they were okay (they were).
Saturday:
Our first lesson was with a FB referral in a neighboring village. Turns out they were a “Prophet and Prophetess” couple, you meet a lot of… interesting people in Botswana. We reminded a lot of people about church, gave a blessing, taught 4 more lessons and went to the Louis family's home. I love their family so much and Brother Louis’ brother is joining us now and I can totally see him getting baptized.
Sunday:
We went around waking up and reminding people about church and then dropped the sisters at some of their friends homes so they could walk with them. After the 1st hour we rushed to the monarch branch so Santos could do a baptismal interview for them. Then we blasted off to F Town branch to witness a baptism of someone Santos found when he was serving there. For lunch we came home and made a boatload of macaroni with red sauce. We only got a couple lessons and a bunch of contacts since people cancel on Sundays. We also went finding with Govy. Our zone did great on hitting our goals this week and Santos and I crushed our area goals.
Monday:
6/8 elders here went to the mall and we all got haircuts and then went to the Allens/ Youngs. We played pickleball for hours, it was a blast as usual. They also made some homemade cafe rio type food that slapped! We had a lesson and a bunch of contacts to end the night.
Spiritual Thought:
Set high goals for yourself. Keep them realistic but set them high. Elder Santos and I decided to set higher goals than usual this week. However, as we constantly checked in on them, set smaller goals to get there, by the end of the week we had actually exceeded most of our goals.
When we set goals for ourselves in life and then check in on them, we will accomplish great things. Whether they be physical, spiritual, mental, intellectual, whatever.
Here's a couple quotes I love About goal setting…
“A goal is a destination or an end, while a plan is the route by which you get there. … Goal setting is essentially beginning with the end in mind. And planning is devising a way to get to that end” (M. Russell Ballard)
When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates” (quoted by Thomas S. Monson, “Thou Art a Teacher Come from God,”
Conclusion:
Love you all, I hope all is well, praying and thinking about you always. Have a great week!!
Elder Miller <3
1. Some of the Louis family! We love them so much. The little guy instantly fell asleep on me.
2. Govy! He is a legend around here. He's a recent convert and has been spending a lot of time with us. Make sure to check out his video in the link.
3. They sell these salts in the grocery store. Each one has a different purpose. Some will bring you good luck,
some will help you fall in love, some will keep bad dreams away. Interesting.
