Week #15 Happy New Year
Some highlights:
Tuesday: We started the week by helping a member do laundry. I am quickly honing my hand-washing skills. This was only my second time now and they laughed at me less than my first time so that's an improvement.
Wednesday: We had a surprise call from a member saying they were outside the grocery store with 500 pounds of bones and had no means of transporting them back home. So we had to miss a few lessons to go load our car with bags full of cow bones, heads, ribs, spines, and kneecaps. It took us two trips. They wanted us to then drop them off at all the members' homes but unfortunately, we didn't have time that day.
Thursday: The morning after we transported the bones they still needed our help to transport them to some members' homes. It was truly one of the worst things I've smelled so we went and got our car washed instantly.
We helped Queeny fetch water from the closest tap. Everyone has a little plastic stick with a circular metal chip on the end of it. You insert it into the tap and then it starts pouring out water. We filled up a few buckets and carried them back to her house. Apparently, everyone has been asking for the “Shilumbu” (white people) to help them get water. We ended the night by getting some good pizza.
Friday: On Friday I lead the area the whole day because Elder Tolbert is going to be leaving Swak soon since his Visa expires, so we're making sure I know how to lead. We also got to quickly say hi to that awesome family that we were meeting with a few weeks ago. They've been very busy and moving around for the holidays so we haven't seen them in a while so that was nice.
Saturday: A lady in our branch got married today so we were setting up the chapel the whole day. Every time someone saw us they needed us to run an errand for them because no one has a car. We were setting up basically all day. At the beginning of the week we prayed for more service opportunities so our prayers were answered this week.
When someone is getting married the girls at the wedding do this very loud yapping kind of battle cry-sounding thing. It was pretty interesting to say the least haha but it was cool. We went to a member's house at the end of the night and there were some drunk guys that were outside blasting Michael Jackson and Tupac so that was very refreshing to hear. We can only listen to the youth albums and hymns basically so it was a nice switch-up.
Sunday: We walked to church with some of our friends which was nice but I haven't walked for that long in a while. Me and Tolbert were so dead by the end of it, it was quite embarrassing. At the end of the night, the second councilor to the Mission President took us out to get food and we got some delicious brisket sandwiches and even tried a springbok steak. It was quite good actually but a little gamey.
Monday: We went to Dune 7 today which is the tallest sand dune in the Namib desert. We hiked it but wow it was exhausting. It doesn't look that bad until you start climbing up and then you really understand how tall it is. It was very steep as well. Later we went to a restaurant called “The Tug” for New Year's Day/P-Day and got a nice steak dinner and finished off with some Créme Bruleé so there were no complaints there. At the end of the night, we bought some fireworks and took them to Ebenzo’s (Returned Missionary that we are friends with) house and lit them off. People came from all over the street to watch. It was so much fun and a great way to kick off the new year.
Conclusion:
Sorry for the boring email this week but I didn't have much time to write and wanted to just get a quick report out. I hope you all had an amazing New Year's Day and wish you a happy New Year!
As always, all the best,
Elder Miller
