Week #35 The Road From Mortal Trials To Celestial Rewards, Always Winds Through Gethsemane.
What's up, everyone?! I had a pretty good week this week but also nothing crazy happened. Let's get started…
Tuesday:
I showed Elder Mathias how to set up a weekly planning board and then we called people for hours. We taught two sisters, Pauline and Opelo who are super cool and seem interested in the gospel. Next, we taught a brother named Botho who is on date and is very accepting and proactive about learning the gospel. Our next lesson was with a man from “The Band of Brothers” which was canceled. There is a church article and a general conference talk about them somewhere but I don't know the name, if you find it please let me know. We taught a few more lessons and even taught one with the other elders. When we got home we started a game of Monopoly.
Wednesday:
We typically leave the flat around 12 because of the additional studies since Elder Mathias is in training and then also English study. We taught a family who seem interested but the commitment is lacking and then we taught our friend Abel who's on date. He’s 17 and walks on crutches to church which is a 45 minute walk for me, he’s awesome! We drove far to meet a FB referral who turned out to be an angry old lady that wouldn't let us talk or read from the bible to disprove her, the spirit of contention was crazy even when we were just on the phone with her. We also taught an awesome brother (onkarabile) who seems very interested and is friends with a member. We ended the night by resuming our game of Monopoly. Things are looking promising for me.
Thursday:
Our first lesson was with the Mmila family, they seem genuinely interested despite the father being a pastor. Our next couple of lessons were canceled so we just called people for like two hours. We got some grub at “Hungry Lion” it’s a fried chicken joint. We taught a sister who is on date for the end of the month but is convinced that she is cursed with demons and evil spirits that torment her in the night, I don’t even know to be honest. We taught Brother Botho again and he’s loving the gospel. We taught two widows who are friends, one is a member and the other isn’t but they’re both very funny. We had a couple more lessons today. We finally finished our game of Monopoly tonight, I took the Dub of course.
Friday:
We had district council this morning which went well, two of the sisters joined over the phone since they weren’t feeling well. I can’t remember if I mentioned but there are 8 of us in Mochudi 4 elders and 4 sisters. We got 7 lessons in today and found 4 new people which was awesome! The highlights were our lessons with Abel (the brother on crutches), Onkarabile, and a sister named Wendy who is an International Polo or Cricket player for Bots, I can't remember which sport. We also gave a monkey a biscuit and he was eating it right in front of us so that was sick. Now we’re cooking dinner for us and the other elders. We’ve arranged a schedule where we alternate every two days for cooking dinner and then cook together on Sunday.
Saturday:
We had ward correlation over the phone today so we went to the elders flat and watched it with them. It ended up going for over an hour which was way too long. We drove the elders to their area and on the way we all bought snacks for our member lesson that all the Mochudi missionaries are going to. We taught a lesson after we dropped them and called a lot of people. Our next lesson was with a brother from Zim that we found while walking to a lesson, his name is Rainforce Zenda. Just like his name implies he’s an absolute boss and ate up everything that we shared with him. We had a couple more lessons and then we went to the chapel and waited for the Sisters. All 8 of us drove to the member lesson which was about an hour away. We played some games, shared a message, and had some snacks. On our way home we had some car troubles and had to change the tire and were very late getting back.
Sunday:
We walked to church this morning with Opelo, Pauline, Andile, Marang, Tlotso, and two other kids. While we were waiting for them to come outside we saw a huge baboon just stroll across the yard. Church was pretty good, the highlight was that the stake president was visiting and that guy is so hilarious. We walked back from church with them, this time Law and Were joined us and then we drove home. We ate some lunch and then headed out for the day. We taught a handful of lessons which all went great and then we headed to the elders flat for dinner. We all made chapati which was mid, unfortunately.
Monday:
Because of the car troubles we had on Saturday, Elders Law and Were had to take the car to Gabs. Before they left we all got groceries and then they dropped Mathias and I at the flat. Mathias and I stayed home with no car all day so we got to sleep a lot which was amazing because I never get to sleep on P-Days. Before we headed out for the afternoon I made some waffles to snack on for the week. Then, we headed out and squeaked in one lesson since all of our scheduled ones were canceled. The other elders didn’t make dinner so we ate the waffles I made instead.
Spiritual Thought:
I heard this as I was listening to a talk from Elder Holland (the GOAT) today and I love how true it is.
“Be aware that along this journey is some degree of anguish. That's because the road from faith to pure knowledge, from mortal trials to celestial rewards, always somehow winds through gethsemane.”
Jeffrey R. Holland
A saint through the Atonement of Jesus Christ
God has a plan for each of us to return to live with him again. This plan is only made possible through the atoning sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ which he performed for every single one of us. It is up to us to accept and use this atonement in our own lives to help us overcome trials, challenges, sin, and tribulations so that one day we might obtain celestial splendor.
Conclusion:
This week was a good week, we met new people, helped some of our friends progress, and I’m getting to know the area and the people a lot better! I hope that you’re all doing great and I appreciate all the messages, love, and prayers that I’ve received. I also love and pray for you all but the messaging I have to get better at. I love you and God loves you, have an amazing week!
